Qatar's population is small enough that there are only a handful of organisations that actually book an international act. That makes the market efficient once you are talking to the right one, and slow if you are not. Buyers fall into four groups: national cultural and tourism bodies, venue operators (amphitheatres, arenas, exhibition halls), major-event organisers working to a fixed date, and destination developments in the newer districts.

The second structural feature is that almost everything is calendar-locked. Doha's cultural calendar is published well ahead and heavily promoted, so a booking is usually a decision about a specific slot rather than an open date.

The third is heat. Between May and September the outdoor window is effectively closed and humidity makes even covered outdoor rigging uncomfortable. Indoor volumes carry the summer.

• November to March — the whole working year. Outdoor and waterfront work, festivals and destination activations all sit in this window. It is also the densest period for competing events, so dates go early.
• Qatar National Day, 18 December. A fixed, heavily programmed date with city-wide activity.
• Ramadan and the Eid holidays. Evening timings shift and content is reviewed for cultural fit. Wordless acts travel best — both the Wheel of Death and the Globe of Death carry no dialogue.
• May to September — indoor only. Plan for air-conditioned venues, and plan the freight for heat rather than for rain.

In Qatar the performance permit is filed by the local organiser or the venue through the national tourism authority. A visiting act cannot file it on its own, which is the single most common reason a date slips: the act is ready and the paperwork has not been started.

• Equipment. Professional equipment under an ATA Carnet, so nothing is permanently imported.
• Freight. Air into Doha is straightforward and priced on volume, which suits a wheel and a sphere poorly. Sea freight is cheaper and slower by weeks — decide early, because this is the item that sets the critical path.
• Insurance. Performance and third-party liability certificates issued before load-in.
