This is the part of a Malaysian booking that catches overseas producers out, and it is purely a sequencing issue.

• Step one — the government endorsement. Performances by foreign artistes require approval through the central one-stop body for foreign artiste performances, under the communications ministry, before any immigration application can be submitted. The endorsement screens the act and its content, and it is the long pole in the process.
• Step two — the immigration pass. With endorsement in hand, the sponsor applies for the professional visit pass, which permits a stay of up to twelve months though it is commonly issued for a shorter engagement period.
• The sponsor must be a Malaysian entity. The application is filed in Malaysia by a locally registered sponsor, which carries registration and capital requirements depending on its ownership structure. The artiste cannot file for themselves, and applicants are expected to remain outside Malaysia until the pass is approved.
• East Malaysia is separate. A pass approved for peninsular Malaysia does not cover Sabah or Sarawak, which run their own approving route. A multi-city Malaysian tour has to plan for both.
• Tax. Income earned by a non-resident performer in Malaysia is subject to withholding, modifiable by treaty. The local sponsor handles it.

Content matters. Silent apparatus acts — the Wheel of Death and the Globe of Death both carry no dialogue and no lyrics — are the simplest category to endorse. We say so at proposal stage because it changes what is realistic to offer. Requirements and timelines remain subject to the competent authority.

• Chinese New Year (January or February). The single biggest family-programming window of the year, and the busiest for malls. Mall atrium slots are contested and book out earliest.
• Hari Raya periods. A second major retail and family window. Timings and content are reviewed for cultural fit.
• November to February — the northeast monsoon. Heavy rain makes open-air rigged work unreliable on the peninsula east coast in particular. Indoor and covered formats carry the period comfortably.
• School holidays and year-end. Consistent demand from malls and integrated resorts. Family programming at its strongest.
• Note the sequencing trap. The approval chain takes weeks, so a Chinese New Year booking has to be initiated months earlier. A late enquiry for the peak window is the most common reason a good idea does not happen.
