Circus Act for Hire in Tokyo — Commercial Facilities, Corporates and the Venue Standard
Tokyo is one of the most developed commercial-facility entertainment markets anywhere: shopping centres, station-side complexes, theme parks and department stores programme acts year-round. At the same time, the Japanese entertainment residence status imposes a formal standard on the performance venue itself. This page covers that standard, what the buyers look for, and how the calendar runs.

Who buys: the commercial facilities lead
Tokyo entertainment procurement is dominated by commercial facilities — shopping centres, station-side developments and department stores — which programme atrium and plaza events continuously and treat them as a traffic driver rather than a one-off. The theme park and leisure sector buys seasonal and repeatable programming. The corporate and event sector buys for launches, incentive programmes and customer events, often at a premium.
Two traits stand out. First, presentation standards are high: staging, sound, costumes and cueing are all expected to be finished to a professional level, and the audience notices. Second, the audience is disciplined and attentive, which means quieter, more precise craft also works here — not only loud spectacle.
The residence status puts a standard on the venue
This is the structural point that separates Japan from most markets, and it is worth understanding before a site is confirmed.
- The entertainment residence status covers performance work in venues such as theatres, halls and entertainment facilities, and it requires the employing venue to meet a defined standard.
- The standard is concrete. It addresses the performance space and back-of-house: a stage or performance area of at least roughly 13 square metres, a dressing area of at least roughly 9 square metres, and a minimum number of full-time staff at the facility. In practice this means a shop floor is not a qualifying venue — a facility with a proper stage and back-of-house is.
- Practical consequence. Where the intended site cannot meet the standard, the usual answer is to restructure: a different venue within the same programming, or a status better suited to a non-performance activity.
We raise this at the venue-selection stage rather than after a site is booked. Thresholds and requirements are set by the competent authority, should be verified against current guidance, and remain subject to its final decision.
Which act suits which venue
| Qualifying hall or theatre 达标剧场 / 会堂 | The safe route. A proper stage, dressing facilities and in-house staff. Floor-level craft and single-point aerial work sit comfortably; ceilings usually rule out the Wheel of Death. |
|---|---|
| Large hall or arena 大型会堂 / 场馆 | Where the wheel becomes possible. A genuine 15 m clear height over the wheel position, a 15 by 12 m performance area and a floor rated to about 5 t per square metre. |
| Commercial facility atrium 商业设施中庭 | Ground-level and repeatable, subject to the venue standard. The Globe of Death and acrobatic sets suit a family crowd and several shows a day — provided the facility itself qualifies. |
| Theme park or leisure facility 主题乐园 / 休闲设施 | Seasonal and repeatable programming. Short, bright, wordless acts run several times a day across a season, for a mixed family audience. |
Season: the calendar follows the holidays
- Golden Week (late April to early May). The first major public programming window of the year, and one of the busiest for commercial facilities.
- Summer school holidays (July and August). The strongest family programming period. Theme parks and shopping centres both programme heavily, and this is when family audiences are most available.
- Autumn. A quieter, cooler window that suits outdoor and festival programming, with a distinct seasonal aesthetic that local programming often leans into.
- December and New Year. Winter illumination and year-end programming, plus corporate activity. Premium facilities book earliest.
- Cherry-blossom season. A short but intense public-programming window when outdoor events cluster.
What we need from your side
- The venue, with confirmation of its stage area, dressing facilities and staffing. If it cannot meet the standard, we should know before the site is committed.
- The venue clear height, or a section drawing.
- Whether this is a commercial-facility programme, a theme-park season or a corporate event, and the number of shows per day.
- The audience profile and the language policy for any spoken element. Our headline acts carry no dialogue and are suitable for audiences of any language.
Send those and we will come back with a format recommendation and a technical plan, free of charge and before any contract discussion.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have a resident show in Tokyo?
No. We do not hold a resident production in Japan. Engagements are project-based: a guest act inside an existing programme, a seasonal theme-park booking, a commercial-facility event, or a run operated jointly with a local partner.
What is the venue standard?
The entertainment residence status addresses the performance venue itself, setting minimums for the performance area, the dressing facilities and the facility staffing. A shop floor does not qualify; a facility with a proper stage and back-of-house does. We check the venue against this before a site is committed.
Which act suits a department store or shopping centre?
Ground-level work with no dialogue: the Globe of Death and acrobatic sets, several times a day, for a family audience — provided the facility meets the venue standard.
When is the peak programming window?
Golden Week and the summer school holidays are the two strongest windows for family programming, with December and New Year carrying the winter season and corporate activity.
How early should we start?
Three months minimum, and longer for Golden Week or the summer holidays. Premium facilities and the residence-status process both set the pace.
