Space WheelWhat Is the Wheel of Death? (And Why It Is Also Called the Space Wheel)
In one line: a rotating steel wheel raised on a rig at height, with performers walking and running on the outer rims, wearing no safety line. This page explains how it works, why there is no line, and what a venue has to provide.

The apparatus
Large wheels are mounted on a central axle, raised on a steel rig. The performers work on the outer rims, not inside the wheels — which is the detail most people get wrong when they picture it.
Because the wheels sit on a shared axle, one performer going up the rim carries the other down. The two positions are mechanically linked: each performer is, in a literal sense, the other's counterweight. That is why the act is performed in pairs or small groups rather than solo.
We stage both a three-wheel arena configuration and a more compact two-wheel staging, depending on the venue.
What the performers do up there
- Walking and running on the rim while the wheel turns — the base movement, and already the thing audiences cannot look away from.
- Skipping rope on the outside of the turning rim — a version we can include, and the moment most audiences audibly react.
- Blindfolded walking — performed without sight, relying entirely on rhythm and muscle memory. Also available in our programme.
- Balance and timing sequences between the performers, where the linked axle means a mistimed step has consequences for both.
Our standard version runs 10–12 minutes.
Why there is no safety line
This is the question audiences ask most, and the honest answer has two parts.
Physically, a line would be a liability rather than a protection. The performer is moving continuously on a rotating circular rim at height; a tether anchored to the rig would foul the rotation or catch on the structure itself. In this specific geometry, a line creates a hazard rather than removing one.
Structurally, the safety comes from elsewhere: the rig is over-engineered for the load, the rim surface is engineered for grip, the rotation speed is controlled, and the performers are specialists who have done this movement thousands of times. Our safety regime is built around preventing the situation rather than catching a fall — three-stage inspection, a dedicated safety officer, a rehearsed emergency procedure and 100% credential coverage.
That is also the reason the act reads the way it does. The audience is not watching a stunt with a safety net; they are watching a skill performed without one. The tension is real, not manufactured.

Why it closes the show
Programme order is not arbitrary. The Wheel of Death is placed last for a structural reason: it is the only act in the programme that produces silence in a large audience.
Everything before it — the ensemble pieces, the comedy, the aerial work — builds energy and noise. The wheel takes that energy and converts it into held breath. Nothing after it would land correctly, because the audience has already been taken to the top of the curve.
It is also a silent act in the literal sense: no dialogue, no narration, no lyrics that matter. That makes it usable in any market without localisation — a practical advantage for anyone programming across languages.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Wheel of Death?
A rotating steel wheel raised on a rig at height, with performers walking and running on the outer rims without a safety line. It is also known internationally as the Space Wheel.
Is it the same as the Globe of Death?
No. The Globe of Death is a steel sphere standing on the ground with motorcycles riding inside it. The Wheel of Death is airborne, with people on the outside of a rotating wheel.
Why do the performers not use a safety line?
A tether in this geometry would foul the rotation and the structure, creating a hazard rather than removing one. Safety comes from the rig design, the rim engineering, controlled rotation speed, specialist performers and a documented inspection regime.
How long does the act run?
Our standard version runs 10–12 minutes. Blindfolded and skipping-rope segments can be included.
What is the minimum clear height?
At least 15 m over the wheel position. A full grand circus programme containing the wheel needs 12 m clear overall.
Can it tour internationally?
Yes. The apparatus is self-contained and travels with its own technical crew. Engagements are planned around the site survey, local licensing and freight timing.

Space Wheel)
