Circus Act for Hire in Zurich — Corporate Events, Galas and the Permit Question

Zurich buys corporate moments: annual meetings, client galas, trade-fair programming and high-value hospitality. Budgets here support premium work. The complication is a permit rule with a detail that most organisers discover only after the contract is signed — and it is worth understanding before you commit dates.

Acrobatic performance staged for a corporate gala audience

Who buys: a corporate-first market

The brief in Zurich is usually a corporate one. The main buyers are financial and professional-services firms programming annual meetings and client events, the trade-fair and conference sector around the exhibition centre, and hospitality and venue operators buying premium entertainment for private functions. Public festival programming exists but is not the centre of gravity.

What this audience responds to is craft and restraint. A gala in a grand hotel ballroom is not an arena show, and the acts that land are the ones that read as precision rather than scale: hand-balancing, single-point aerial work and a compact, sharply executed acrobatic set.

Venues: the ballroom ceiling is the real constraint

The dominant Zurich venue, and the most limited. Ceilings are typically well short of the 15 m the Wheel of Death needs. Floor-level craft and low aerial work on a single point are what fit here.
Exhibition and congress halls Where the full programme becomes possible. High ceilings, engineered rigging points and service access. This is the venue type that can clear the wheel and the sphere.
A full-height home. Arena-scale floors for headline apparatus acts and large audiences.
Open-air and lakeside 露天 / 湖畔A summer option. Outside the ceiling problem entirely. Viable in the warmer months for ground-based and aerial apparatus acts.

The Swiss permit rule, and the number that matters

Switzerland is not in the EU, and its own rules apply. Two figures decide the route.

  • The general position. Artists and crew coming from outside the EU and EFTA need a work and residence permit even for short engagements, and permits are subject to quotas. Employment must be shown to serve the economic interest of Switzerland and not to be available locally.
  • The exemption most buyers miss. Where stage artists perform under a non-employment arrangement — meaning the Swiss partner organises the event and provides the infrastructure, ticketing and marketing, while the visiting act is responsible solely for the programme — the engagement can fall outside the permit requirement for up to eight calendar days per year. Beyond that, authorisation is required.
  • EU, EEA and UK nationals can generally use the online notification procedure for short-term work, subject to day limits per calendar year and an advance notification deadline.

The practical point is simple: eight days is a low ceiling for a run, and knowing it before dates are set is the difference between a clean engagement and a scramble. Requirements are set by the competent authority and are subject to change.

Season: it follows the corporate calendar

  • January to March — the busiest corporate window. Annual meetings, the early-year conference season and winter hospitality programming all cluster here.
  • June and September — mid-year programmes. Congress and trade-fair activity with associated client events.
  • November to December — the year-end peak. Galas, client evenings and holiday events. Premium venues and crew are booked first and earliest.
  • Summer — festival and lakeside programming. Open-air work becomes practical and the ceiling constraint disappears. Public programming competes for attention and site access.

What we need from your side

  • The venue and its clear height, or a section drawing. In a ballroom this figure decides the entire programme; in a congress hall it opens it up.
  • The contracting structure — whether the Swiss partner is the organiser with the act responsible only for the programme, or whether this is straightforward employment. This single fact decides the permit route.
  • The total performance days, not just the show days, so the day limits can be checked before dates are fixed.
  • The audience profile — client gala, internal meeting, public programme — and any language requirement. Our headline acts carry no dialogue.

Send those and we will come back with a format recommendation and a technical plan, free of charge and before any contract discussion.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a resident show in Zurich?

No. We do not hold a resident production in the city. Engagements are project-based: a guest act inside a corporate or gala programme, a trade-fair booking, a public event, or a run operated jointly with a local partner.

What is the eight-day point about?

Where a stage artist performs under a non-employment arrangement — the Swiss partner organises the event and the act is responsible only for the programme — the engagement can fall outside the permit requirement for up to eight calendar days a year. Beyond that, authorisation is required. Runs should be planned with that figure in view.

Can the Wheel of Death play in a hotel ballroom?

Normally not. Ballroom ceilings are typically well short of the 15 m the wheel needs. Floor-level craft and low single-point aerial work are what suit that space.

Which act works best for a client gala?

A compact, sharply executed programme: hand-balancing, single-point aerial work and a tight acrobatic set. This audience reads precision rather than scale.

How early should we start?

Three months minimum. For a November-to-December or January-to-March date, start six months ahead — permit processing and premium venue availability both set the pace.
