The Globe of Death — A History, from the 1904 Patent to Today
The act is usually mistaken for a variant of the Wall of Death. It is the other way round — the sphere came first. This page sets out where it came from, why it is a sphere rather than a drum, and how it is ridden today.

Older than the Wall of Death
The two acts are constantly confused, so the unusual part is worth stating first: the Globe of Death is the older of the two. It did not evolve out of the Wall of Death. They grew up on separate lines.
The sphere traces back to the bicycle stunt acts of the early 1900s — the cycle whirls, in which a rider worked up speed inside a wooden bowl or sphere until the machine held a line on the curved wall. The form had a patent by 1904: Arthur Rosenthal, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is recorded as patenting a Bicyclist's Globe — an enclosed sphere in which a rider could loop vertically and not merely circle.
The Wall of Death came out of a different world entirely: American board-track motorcycle racing. The first carnival motordrome appeared at Coney Island in 1911. By 1915 the first cylinders with perfectly vertical walls were touring fairgrounds under the name Wall of Death, and at the phenomenon's peak in the 1930s more than a hundred motordromes were travelling in the United States.
Dates and patent references above are drawn from published records and the standard reference entries on both acts. Where the historical record is thin, we say so rather than fill the gap with a good story.
Why a sphere, and not a drum
A drum has vertical walls and an open top. A rider inside it can hold a horizontal line and nothing else. A sphere encloses the rider completely, which changes what is physically possible: the machine can be carried over the top, through a vertical loop, and back down — not only around the equator.
The construction is the reason the act looks the way it does. A Globe of Death is a riveted steel mesh sphere: mesh rather than sheet, so the audience can see straight through it at speed, and so the riders can read one another's position by sight alone.
That produces the sequence audiences recognise — two or three machines inside a sphere roughly six metres across, crossing within half a metre of each other, with no lane markings and no signal between riders beyond sound and movement.
The name has changed; the record has not
The name has been dressed up more than once. Some shows bill the same apparatus as the Globe of Steel, in the same spirit that Ringling Bros. renamed the Wheel of Death the Wheel of Steel for its 2007 touring edition — the word "death" tests badly with family audiences. The apparatus did not change. The poster did.
The record. The Guinness World Record for the act stands at six riders plus one person standing at the centre of the sphere, set by the Infernal Varanne team in Milan on 13 April 2011. Professional presentations normally run two or three machines, because width inside the sphere is the constraint long before courage is.
What has actually changed over a century is not the idea but the discipline around it: documented daily inspections, engineered redundancy in the rig, a published wind limit for outdoor dates, and a flat, hard-standing floor that is checked — not assumed — before load-in.
How the act is ridden today
Our own presentation runs 8–10 minutes inside a six-metre sphere; the night version adds laser and smoke, which have to be planned into the technical fit-up rather than bolted on at the venue.
The four things that decide whether a date is deliverable are the same four we ask every buyer about:
| Clear height 净高 | The sphere is rigged as a working structure — height is needed for the rig, not for the riding. |
|---|---|
| Footprint 占地 | A six-metre sphere plus a safety ring: the audience stands outside the ring, not against the mesh. |
| Floor 地面 | Level and hard-standing. Slopes, grass and sprung stages are all problems, and all are usually solvable in advance. |
| Seating 观众席 | Reads well from 500 up; in a mall atrium the vertical sightlines often work better than in a flat hall. |
Credential coverage across the company is 100%, and the safety file — risk assessment, daily check sheets, insurance certificates — is supplied to the venue before anyone has to ask for it.
The history, then the booking
The reason a buyer looks up this history is usually practical: they have been offered a Globe of Death and want to know whether it is a genuine classic or a stunt bolted onto a marketing plan. It is a classic — a hundred and twenty years old, and still the loudest ninety seconds a mid-sized space can hold.
It books three ways: as a single act licensed into a programme you already run, as one half of a two-act stunt show of about twenty minutes with the Wheel of Death, or inside our full big-top programme of more than ten acts.
Send a floor plan or a few photographs of the space, and we will tell you plainly whether a sphere fits, where the safety ring lands, and what the loading route looks like — free of charge, before any contract is discussed.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Globe of Death the same as the Wall of Death?
No, and the sphere is the older of the two. The Wall of Death is an open-topped drum with vertical wooden walls, from which riders hold a horizontal line. The Globe of Death is a fully enclosed steel mesh sphere, so riders can also loop vertically and pass over the top. They developed on separate lines from the early 1900s.
Who invented the Globe of Death?
The form grew out of the cycle-whirl bicycle acts of the early 1900s. The earliest patent on record is a Bicyclist's Globe, registered in 1904 by Arthur Rosenthal of Grand Rapids, Michigan. A century of refinement since then has come from working riders rather than from any single inventor.
Why is it called the Globe of Death?
Because of what the audience sees: machines crossing inside a sphere at speed, with no lane markings and no safety line. It is also why some shows market the identical apparatus as the Globe of Steel — the construction is the same, only the billing changes.
How many riders can be inside at once?
The Guinness World Record stands at six riders plus one person standing at the centre, set in Milan in 2011. Professional presentations normally run two or three machines, because space inside a six-metre sphere runs out well before nerve does.
How long is the act, and can it be performed indoors?
Ours runs 8–10 minutes, with a night version that adds laser and smoke. Yes to indoors, subject to rigging height, a level hard-standing floor and room for a safety ring around the sphere. Send plans or photographs and we will confirm it against your actual space.
Can we programme it with the Wheel of Death in the same show?
Yes — the two are frequently bought together as a two-act stunt show of roughly twenty minutes high in the running order. Both need a technical window for rigging and a site check beforehand, so the two are usually scheduled into one load-in rather than two.
Does the act require any local licensing?
Requirements vary by country and by venue type, and often turn on whether the space is a permanent structure, a temporary one or open air. We handle the filings together with the promoter and provide the technical and safety documentation the authority asks for. Local requirements always govern in the end.

Bicyclist's Globe
- 名字被公关改过:同款器械有时被叫 Globe of Steel(与 Ringling 把飞轮改叫 Wheel of Steel 同理);器械没变,只是海报变了
