Wheel of Death or Globe of Death — Deciding It on Your Venue, Not on Taste

The two are often treated as one act in two sizes. They are not: they carry different risk profiles, need different venues and load in differently. This page puts them on one table so you can decide from height, floor load and access rather than from taste.

Wheel of Death rigged for a performance

Two very different kinds of risk

The Wheel of Death is a height act. Two performers walk and run on the outer rims of a rotating steel wheel, with no safety line. The difficulty is balance under rotation, and the fact that each performer's rhythm is decided by the other one's — the two halves of the wheel are physically coupled.

The Globe of Death is a speed act. Two or three motorcycles cross inside a six-metre sphere, within half a metre of one another, with no lane markings and no signal between riders beyond sound and movement. The difficulty is closure rate and judgement, not height.

That distinction is the whole reason a venue can comfortably host one and be unable to host the other. A low atrium with a solid floor is a fine home for a sphere and a hopeless one for a wheel.

Side by side, on the numbers

Clear height 净高Wheel: ≥ 15 m over the wheel position. Globe: rig height only — the sphere is flown as a working structure, so a mall atrium usually clears it.
Footprint 表演区Wheel: ≥ 15 m × 12 m. Globe: a 6 m diameter sphere plus a safety ring the audience stands outside.
Wheel: ≥ 5 t/㎡ under the rig. Globe: level, hard-standing surface — no slope, no grass, no sprung stage.
Power 用电380 V / ≥ 150 kW on a dedicated circuit, for a programme containing both.
Seating 观众席Wheel: ≥ 800 preferred. Globe: reads well from 500 up, and works vertically in an atrium.
Running time 时长Wheel 10–12 min (blindfolded and skipping-rope versions available). Globe 8–10 min, with a laser-and-smoke night version.
Load-in 装台Both need a technical window and an advance site check. Bought together they share one load-in, not two.

Which one your venue can actually take

  • Grandstand height and a load-bearing floor? The Wheel of Death is available, and it is the act to close an evening with — it is the closing act of our own programme.
  • An atrium, a low hall, or a floor you cannot drill? The Globe of Death is usually the answer. It is the act that survives contact with a shopping mall, a showroom or an exhibition hall.
  • Neither of the above, but a stage? Then neither act is the right purchase — and we will say so rather than sell you a rig your building cannot carry.

The site survey is free and comes first. Send a plan, a section drawing or a few photographs with something in frame for scale, and you will get a straight yes or no, with the reason, before any contract is discussed.

Running both in one evening

Yes, and it is the way most buyers in a mid-to-large venue end up going. The two together make a two-act stunt show of roughly twenty minutes of stage time — short enough to sit inside an awards evening, long enough to be the reason people came.

Three practical points decide whether it works on your date:

  1. Order. In our own programme the globe runs first and the wheel closes. Programming it the other way round spends the wheel early and leaves the audience with the quieter act.
  2. The technical window. Both rigs have to be built, checked and rehearsed. A single load-in window serves both, but it has to exist on the schedule — not be carved out of the dinner service.
  3. Two floors, not one. The floor under the wheel carries the rig; the floor under the globe has to be level and solid. In a mixed-use space those are sometimes different rooms, which is fine, and sometimes the same glossy marble, which is not.

How to choose, in one paragraph

If your space has the height and the floor, buy the Wheel of Death — nothing else a venue of that size can book holds an audience the way it does, and it is built to close a show. If your space is an atrium, a hall or a mall, buy the Globe of Death — it is engineered for exactly those rooms. If you have the budget and want the maximum impact a mid-sized venue can physically hold, buy both and run them as one twenty-minute stunt programme.

What we will not do is talk you into the wrong one. The act is decided by the building; our job is to tell you which building you have.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the two is more dangerous?

They carry different risks rather than different amounts of it. The wheel is a height and balance act performed without a safety line; the globe is a speed act with machines crossing inside an enclosed sphere. Both are managed the same way in professional practice: engineered redundancy in the rig, documented daily inspections, a published wind limit for outdoor dates, and a named person on site who can stop the show.

Which one needs more height?

The Wheel of Death, by a wide margin — at least 15 metres clear over the wheel position. The Globe of Death needs rigging height for the sphere rather than riding height, so lower-ceilinged spaces such as atrium-style venues are regularly able to take it.

Can we programme both in the same show?

Yes. Bought together they make a two-act stunt show of roughly twenty minutes and share a single load-in. In our own programme the globe runs first and the wheel closes the evening.

Which one costs more?

It depends far more on your city, date, venue and freight than on which act you pick, so the honest answer is that we quote rather than list. The variables are set out on our cost page, and the site survey that produces a real number is free.

Which is the better choice for a shopping mall?

The Globe of Death, almost always. A mall atrium rarely has the clear height for a wheel, and the globe is built to be read from the surrounding floors — the vertical sightlines in an atrium often work better than a flat hall does. Where even the globe does not fit, we programme floor acts instead.

What if my venue meets neither set of requirements?

Then we say so, and propose something that does fit — a floor act, a smaller rig, or a different format entirely. The one thing we will not do is take a booking our rig cannot safely play.
