Circus Act for Hire in Berlin — Theatres, Variete and Arenas
Berlin has one of the deepest circus audiences in Europe, and it reviews what it sees. The thing that actually decides whether a booking happens, though, is German employment law for visiting artists — which looks generous until you read the exception. This page covers both.

Who buys: theatres, variete houses and trade-fair organisers
Berlin buys entertainment through three channels. The theatre and variete sector — a long tradition of variety stages and guest programming, where a visiting act is judged on craft and sits inside an existing evening. The corporate and conference market, driven by the trade-fair calendar and a large headquarters economy, which buys short, high-impact slots. And the arena and festival circuit, which buys headline or supporting programming around large events.
Audiences here are informed. A programme that reads as a generic spectacle will be reviewed as one. The formats that travel best to Berlin are the ones with a genuine technical discipline behind them.
The German rule: 90 days, and the circus exception
This is the single most important paragraph for anyone planning a German engagement, and it is routinely misunderstood.
- The general rule. Under the Employment Ordinance, non-EU artists who keep their ordinary residence abroad can perform in Germany for up to 90 days within a twelve-month period in certain contexts — festival and cultural-event appearances, guest performances, and one-day shows for up to 15 days a year — without the activity being treated as employment requiring a separate work authorisation.
- The exception that matters. Those exemptions do not apply to people engaged by a German establishment in the performing arts — including a circus troupe. Performances and rehearsals, paid or unpaid, then require a residence title permitting employment, and the Federal Employment Agency is involved through its international placement service.
- EU and EEA nationals are on a different footing entirely and should confirm their own position; the rule above is written for third-country nationals.
We therefore identify, at proposal stage, who the contracting party is — a festival or cultural event on the one side, a German circus or producing house on the other — because that single fact decides the paperwork route. Requirements are set by the competent authority and the embassy in each case.
Which act suits which venue
| Arena 竞技场馆 | The realistic home for the Wheel of Death. A genuine 15 m clear height over the wheel position, a 15 by 12 m performance area and a floor rated to about 5 t per square metre. Large arenas clear this; theatre fly towers do not. |
|---|---|
| Variete theatre or opera house 综艺剧场 / 歌剧院 | Floor-level craft. Hand-balancing, single-point aerial work and a tight acrobatic set. Beautiful in this context — but the ceiling rules out anything height-driven. |
| Trade fair or conference venue 展会 / 会议中心 | Short, repeatable, self-contained. The Globe of Death and acrobatic acts suit a hall with high ceilings and a mobile audience. Sets are built to be struck quickly. |
| Open-air summer site 夏季露天场地 | Where outdoor rigging opens up. Large sites remove the ceiling constraint entirely. Berlin is a summer-event city, so this is a genuine option in the right months. |
Season: a city built around winter
- October to February — peak programming. The trade-fair calendar, the pre-Christmas market season, the autumn light-festival window and the year-end corporate period all compress into this stretch. Venues book early.
- December — the tightest fortnight. Company events, city programming and holiday crowds compete for the same halls and the same crew.
- May to September — festival season. Open-air and large-site work becomes practical, but the city calendar is dense and arena availability thins.
- Summer heat and winter cold. Both matter. Rigged outdoor acts are comfortable in a Berlin summer, and indoor formats carry the year comfortably.
What we need from your side
- The contracting party, named. Whether the engagement is with a festival or event on the one hand, or a German producing house or circus on the other, decides the paperwork route.
- The venue and its clear height, or a section drawing.
- Whether the booking is a single evening, a run, or a series of one-day appearances, with the dates.
- The audience profile — public, corporate, mixed — and the language policy for any spoken element. Our headline acts carry no dialogue at all.
Send those and we will come back with a format recommendation and a technical plan, free of charge and before any contract discussion.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have a resident show in Berlin?
No. We do not hold a resident production in the city. Engagements are project-based: a guest act inside an existing programme, a festival booking, a corporate engagement, or a run operated jointly with a local partner.
Do German work rules apply to a short visit?
Possibly, and the answer surprises people. The 90-day exemption for visiting artists does not extend to performers engaged by a German establishment in the performing arts, including a circus troupe. We identify the contracting party at proposal stage so the correct route is chosen before dates are committed.
Which act suits a Berlin theatre?
Floor-level work: hand-balancing, single-point aerial and compact acrobatics. Theatre ceilings are usually well short of the 15 m the Wheel of Death needs.
Is there a summer market?
Yes. Berlin is a summer-event city with large open-air sites, and outdoor rigging removes the ceiling problem entirely. The constraint in summer is the density of the existing calendar rather than the weather.
How early should we start?
Three months minimum, and six or more for a December date or a fixed festival slot. Venue availability and the approval route both set the pace.
