Neither is a formality, and both move the timeline.
签证与工会：408 娱乐流Immigration: the 408 Entertainment stream
Overseas performers coming to Australia for paid work use the Temporary Activity visa, subclass 408, Entertainment Activities stream. It covers live and screen production, and it can be granted for the duration of the engagement. Three features shape the plan.
- Short and long engagements are structured differently. For a stay of three months or less, an Australian organisation can act as a supporter, which is a lighter test. For longer engagements the Australian party must be an approved sponsor, which carries ongoing obligations.
- Union consultation is required. The sponsor or supporter must consult the relevant Australian union — for live performance that is normally the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance — before engaging overseas personnel. This is a real step in the sequence, not an afterthought, and it needs to be scheduled into the tour plan.
- Importing performers involves a further notification. Bringing a foreign act into Australia also triggers a separate government notification step, handled by the Australian side.

档期The calendar
- December to February — summer peak. The biggest window of the year, including the New Year celebrations that Sydney is known for, and the period when outdoor sites run at full capacity.
- April — the Easter show season. Agricultural and family programming, with large outdoor audiences and a strong tradition of headline entertainment.
- May to June — the winter light festival. A city-wide light and culture festival, which is the natural window for drone work and evening light-based programming.
- January — the city's arts festival month, running alongside the summer holidays.
- School holidays drive family programming across the year; the seasons run opposite to the northern hemisphere, which is an advantage for a producer working to a European or Asian off-season.

Australia's biosecurity regime is strict, and it applies to a touring circus in ways that other markets' customs rules do not.
- Wooden packaging must meet the international standard for treated wood packaging. Untreated crates are refused or treated at the importer's cost, which can cost days.
- Soil and plant residue on apparatus matters. Wheels, tyres, ropes, matting and rigging that have been outdoors can carry soil, seed and plant material, and that is exactly what the inspection is looking for.
- The packing list has to match the shipment. Discrepancies at inspection are what turn a routine clearance into a hold.
House rule of ours: clean and inspect before packing, not on arrival. Cleaning an apparatus at the port of origin is a day's work; being held at the destination is a week.
Our programme contains no animals, which removes the most complex import and licensing category entirely.
