Circus Act for Hire in Amsterdam — Business Events, Theatres and the Water Question

Amsterdam buys entertainment mostly through its business economy: conventions, brand events and corporate programming, with theatres and festivals behind them. One assumption is worth correcting early — a city built on canals is not automatically a city with usable water for a water act. This page explains the difference.

Who buys: a business-events city first

Amsterdam is one of Europe most active convention and business-event cities, and that shapes the brief. The primary buyers are the convention and conference sector, brand and agency producers running launches and incentives, and corporate event teams booking year-end and milestone programmes. The theatre and festival sector sits behind them, buying guest programming and summer programming respectively.

Two consequences follow. First, audience attention is short and structured: a slot has to deliver inside a schedule, not compete with an evening. Second, technical expectations are high. Corporate producers in this city work to tight load-in windows and precise drawings, and a supplier who cannot produce a technical dossier is filtered out early.

Venues — and the water question

Convention and exhibition centre High ceilings and ground-level spectacle. This is the venue type that can clear the 15 m the Wheel of Death needs, and it suits the Globe of Death and acrobatic sets for large moving crowds.
A full-height home for the wheel. Arena-scale floors with engineered rigging points and proper service access.
Theatre and concert halls Floor-level craft. Hand-balancing, single-point aerial and compact acrobatic sets. Ceilings here rule out anything height-driven.
Canal-side and harbour 运河 / 港区Read this carefully. The historic canal ring is narrow, busy and not a performance water body. The open harbour water is a different matter and can support a flyboard show subject to local permits, but the two are not interchangeable.

We check the water site before proposing any in-water format. A canal-front venue is a beautiful backdrop for a ground or aerial act — it is not an automatic green light for a water act.

Season: a summer festival peak and a year-end corporate peak

  • April to September — the festival and public-events season. King's Day at the end of April, the early-summer arts festival, the August canal events and the general festival calendar. Open-air and large-site work becomes practical, and the city gets crowded.
  • November to January — the corporate peak. Year-end events, agency programmes and New Year activity. Indoor formats dominate, and premium venues book out first.
  • February to March — a quieter window. Useful for conference programming and for productions that need a hall without competing against the summer calendar.
  • Weather discipline. Outdoor rigged acts are viable in a Dutch summer but the wind and rain contingency has to be written into the plan rather than improvised on the day.

Work authorisation

The Netherlands sits inside the EU mobility framework, so the answer depends on where the performing company is established.

  • EU-established company posting its own crew — generally the lightest route, built on posting arrangements rather than a separate work permit.
  • Company established outside the EU — a work permit is required before the engagement, and the timeline is materially longer. We raise this at proposal stage, not at contract stage.
  • Short, high-intensity runs are the norm here. A corporate programme may be a single evening or three shows across two days, which makes pre-departure preparation the controlling factor rather than on-site flexibility.

Requirements and timelines are indicative only and subject to the final decision of the competent authority.

What we need from your side

  • The venue and its clear height, or a section drawing — or, for a site-based event, a plan showing where the audience stands and where the act would sit.
  • Whether this is a conference slot, a corporate evening or a public festival programme, and how long the slot is.
  • The load-in and load-out windows. This is often the decisive constraint in a city centre.
  • For any water-based idea: which water body, and whether berthing and shore power are realistic there.

Send those and we will come back with a format recommendation and a technical plan, free of charge and before any contract discussion.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a resident show in Amsterdam?

No. We do not hold a resident production in the city. Engagements are project-based: a guest act inside a conference or gala programme, a festival booking, a brand event, or a run operated jointly with a local partner.

Can you perform a water show in the canals?

Almost certainly not. The historic canal ring is narrow and busy and is not a performance water body. The open harbour water is a different proposition and can support an in-water act subject to local permits. We check the specific site before proposing anything.

Which act suits a conference or gala?

Short, self-contained and high-impact: the Globe of Death, an acrobatic set, or aerial work on a single point. These deliver inside a schedule without needing the rigging depth the Wheel of Death requires.

What about load-in time in the city centre?

It is usually the controlling factor. Central venues have tight windows and restricted vehicle access, so the technical plan is built around the load-in slot from the start rather than adjusted on the day.

How early should we start?

Three months minimum, and earlier for a November-to-January corporate date or a summer festival slot, when premium venues and crew are both in short supply.
