Circus Act for Hire in Barcelona — Catalan Big Tops, the Fira and the Port
Catalonia is one of the deepest circus territories in Europe: historic travelling shows, a circus city, and an audience that knows the craft. That is both an opportunity and a standard. This page sets out the venue landscape, the exceptionally dense summer calendar, and the licensing and rights steps that apply.

Catalonia: an opportunity and a standard
Barcelona is not a city where circus needs explaining. The region has a genuine big-top tradition, a long history of travelling shows, and audiences who have seen good work for generations. A visiting programme is assessed against that baseline rather than against a general entertainment market.
The upside is real: a well-made apparatus act lands with an audience that appreciates it. The requirement is equally real: programming that relies on novelty alone tends to be read as thin here. The formats that travel well are the ones with a visible technical discipline — the Wheel of Death and the Globe of Death among them.
The venue landscape: Fira, port and resort
| Fira and exhibition halls 会展中心 | High ceilings, ground-level spectacle. The exhibition complex is one of the few urban venue types that can clear the 15 m the Wheel of Death needs. Also well suited to the Globe of Death and acrobatic sets for large standing crowds. |
|---|---|
| Port and waterfront 港口 / 滨水 | Flyboard and drone territory. Open water, berthing and shore power. The port and the beaches offer genuinely usable water sites — unlike the canals you may be thinking of elsewhere. |
| Larger arenas 大型竞技场馆 | A full-height home for the wheel. Arena-scale floors with engineered rigging points. This is where the headline apparatus act belongs. |
| Resort parks within reach 近郊主题乐园 | Repeatable day programming. The resort parks south of the city buy short, repeated shows across a season. They are built for a family audience and for several performances a day. |
Season: one of the densest summers in Europe
- June to September — the peak, and the crunch. Tourism, city festivals and open-air programming all stack into this window. Sites, crew and hotel capacity tighten together, and late enquiries are genuinely difficult.
- September — the city festival. The main annual city celebration brings large public programming and heavy competition for central sites.
- October to March — indoor season. Corporate events, trade fairs and theatre programming. Comfortable for any format, and the period when arena and hall availability improves.
- Christmas and the New Year period. Family programming and corporate year-end events, with the usual squeeze on the best venues.
Licences and rights: two separate steps
Two things are often conflated, and they are handled differently.
- Performance permission is normally applied for by the organiser, promoter or venue through the municipal or regional authority, with the technical dossier attached. As a visiting act we supply the documentation rather than filing it.
- Music rights are a separate matter. Where a programme uses recorded or live music in public, reporting to the Spanish collective management society is normally the responsibility of the organiser or venue. It is worth confirming who carries it before the budget is closed.
- EU mobility. Where the performing company is established inside the EU, posting arrangements are generally straightforward. Where it is not, a work authorisation is required, and the timeline is longer than most organisers assume.
Timelines and requirements are indicative only and subject to the final position of the competent authority and the venue.
What we need from your side
- The venue type and its clear height, or a section drawing. On a Fira hall or an arena this single figure unlocks the full programme; in a smaller hall it redirects us to the floor-level formats.
- Whether the booking is a single show, a season run, or several shows a day, with the dates.
- For water-based formats: which site, and whether berthing and shore power are available.
- Who is handling performance permits and music reporting, so we can supply the right documents to the right party.
Send those and we will come back with a format recommendation and a technical plan, free of charge and before any contract discussion.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have a resident show in Barcelona?
No. We do not hold a resident production in the city. Engagements are project-based: a guest act inside an existing programme, a festival or resort booking, a corporate engagement, or a run operated jointly with a local partner.
Which venues can take the Wheel of Death?
Only those offering a genuine 15 m clear height over the wheel position, a 15 by 12 m performance area and a floor rated to about 5 t per square metre. In practice that means the exhibition halls and the large arenas, not theatre stages.
Is there open water for a flyboard show?
Yes. The port and the beaches offer usable water sites with berthing and shore power. This is a real advantage over cities whose waterways are too narrow or too busy for an in-water act.
Who handles music rights?
Reporting to the Spanish collective management society is normally handled by the organiser or venue, but responsibility should be confirmed early. It is a separate step from the performance permit and is often overlooked at budget stage.
How early should we start?
Three months minimum, and six or more for a June-to-September date. That window is the busiest of the year for sites, crew and accommodation alike.
